Stripe-tailed Monitor
Varanus caudolineatus

It is called the Stripe-tailed Monitor because the last half of the tail has 4-5 dark stripes.

It is approx .13m in length from snout to vent and its tail is approx .32m in length.

It is found only in Western Australia in the arid areas of the midwest, pilbara and in the interior.

It prefers hard stony soils with mulga woodlands and scrublands.

All these photographs were taken at the Armadale Repitle Centre in Perth. (Lighting in captivity makes a difference in photographs, these are the same monitor but the heat lamps add a light shade to the monitor.)

 What does it eat?

Its recorded that this monitor mostly feeds on geckos from the Gehyra genus.  They will also eat other invertebrates such as cockroaches, scorpions and grasshoppers.

It shelters in tree hollows, between rocks and under fallen trees.

They like to climb and don't venture far from their shelter.

Clutches of 4-5 eggs are laid during summer.
