Pygmy Python /Ant-Hill Python

Of Western Australia
Antaresia perthensis

 Harmless

This is a very small python found in the Pilbara region in Western Australia.  The smallest python in Australia possibly the smallest in the world.

They like to shelter in termite mounds, under spinifex and under rocks like you see here in this picture.

Its total length is approx .6m

These photographs were all taken at the Armadale Reptile Centre in Perth.

They are mostly a nocturnal snake.

It is found in the arid Northwest coast and interior of WA.  From the southern Great Sandy Desert south to the Mullewa district.  It does not occur in Perth. (despite its name).

 What does it eat?

It is thought to feed mostly on geckos from the Gehyra species.

Much is still to be learnt about this snake.

They lay only a small number of eggs.

Found around rocky outcrops and hard stony soils.
