Gilbert's/Bye-Bye Dragon

of Western Australia
  Lophognathus
gilberti

Photographed at Halls Creek in the Kimberley WA

There are two subspecies.  This one and Lophognathus gilberti centralis

They are approx 125mm in length from snout to vent.

The Gilbert's dragon lives in northern Australia from the North West Cape in WA.

It likes to live in woodlands, river margins, mangroves, sandy coastlines and around towns.

I saw this dragon run in short bursts when pursued and then stop and wave, this is why its also called the Bye-Bye or Ta-Ta dragon.  The waving is done to display this is its' territory but it looks more funny than threatening.

Go Here to see our video of this dragon waving, at Halls Creek in the Kimberley.

Photographed at Halls Creek in the Kimberley WA in August

This one on the left was photographed in Broome in the Kimberley, WA in September.  It was on the outside of a cage about to break-in.

They have a clutch of approx 6 eggs.

 What do they eat?

We think they eat insects, probably chasing them.
