Fire-tailed Skink
Morethia ruficauda ruficauda

There are 8 species in the Morethia genus

This is a smooth shiny scaled skink.

They have 5 fingers and 5 toes.

They mostly spend their time on the ground.

They are diurnal.

They are approx 35mm in length from snout to vent.

In Western Australia they are found in the northern half of the state from the Gascoyne and higher.

This skink lives in stony soils and rocky outcrops.

You can see in the photograph how they have a thick tail.

 What do they eat?

I have not been able to find out what this one specifically eats but this group of skinks are arthropod feeders.

Photographed at the Alice Springs Desert Park

View half way up Mt Augustus

I have seen a Fire-tailed skink at Mt Augustus near the Gascoyne.  I didn't get to photograph this skink but it was on rocks and had a very red tail.

They are egg layers.
